WWE Veteran Edge’s trainer has his say on superstar’s potential retirement

1 years ago By Sports Desk

In what could potentially be a significant moment for WWE fans, the latest episode of “WWE SmackDown” may mark Edge’s final match with the company he’s been associated with since 1998.

While “The Rated R Superstar” himself has remained uncertain about the outcome, someone close to him has reportedly expressed the belief that the upcoming bout against Sheamus will serve as Edge’s farewell as an in-ring competitor in WWE.

According to the “Wrestling Observer Newsletter,” Ron Hutchison, Edge’s trainer and friend, has indicated that the WWE Hall of Famer is quite confident that he will retire from in-ring competition following this “SmackDown” appearance. Despite this revelation, Edge has refrained from confirming this viewpoint publicly leading up to the event. However, Edge did offer some insight into his state of mind regarding retirement.

Edge set for retirement after latest appearance on WWE SmackDown

Earlier in the week, Edge addressed the retirement rumors, revealing that this match would be his last as per his current contract. Moreover, the fact that the match is taking place in his hometown of Toronto, Canada, has fueled speculation that it could be his farewell match. Despite acknowledging the physical challenges of wrestling at this stage in his career, Edge remains conflicted about the prospect of retiring. Notably, WWE has not promoted the match as Edge’s retirement match, likely due to his own uncertainty about the decision.

The report from the “Wrestling Observer Newsletter” underscores that Edge initially signed a three-year deal upon his WWE return in 2020. Although this contract was set to expire months ago, it is plausible that an extension was agreed upon. While Edge has explicitly stated that this bout will conclude his existing contract, it remains unclear whether this implies he will become a free agent thereafter. Given WWE’s history of signing retired Superstars to Legends deals, there could be a range of possibilities for Edge’s future within the company.

Edge’s upcoming appearance on “SmackDown” holds added significance due to its location at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, his hometown. WWE’s decision to celebrate his career in this setting adds a layer of emotional resonance to the event. Edge had previously expressed his aspiration to retire in Toronto in the summer of 2023, although his plans shifted.

The possibility of this match against Sheamus marking the conclusion of Edge’s illustrious wrestling career has been amplified by comments from Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio. Meltzer noted that Ron Hutchinson, Edge’s longtime friend and trainer of 30 years, hinted at this being Edge’s final match. While WWE hasn’t officially promoted the match as Edge’s retirement, Meltzer’s insights suggest that the night could indeed signify the end of The Rated R Superstar’s remarkable journey in the squared circle.

Edge’s journey in WWE has been characterized by triumphs and comebacks, from his forced retirement following WrestleMania 27 to his triumphant return at the Royal Rumble in January 2020. His journey has captured the hearts of fans worldwide, making the potential finality of this match a poignant moment for the WWE Universe.
