Charlotte Flair’s Championship Reigns: The Queen’s Dominance

2 months ago By Jhon Woug

Charlotte Flair, more commonly known to many as “The Queen,” is one of the greatest and most decorated female professional wrestlers in WWE history. With a display of unmatched athleticism, charisma, and glimpses of in-ring skill, she has set a new standard for women’s wrestling. This paper discusses Charlotte Flair’s many championship reigns on her way to becoming one of the most successful and most influential performers in wrestling history.

Early Life and Training
Charlotte Flair was born Ashley Elizabeth Fliehr on April 5, 1986, to the legendary Ric Flair. Being a second-generation competitor, Charlotte was around wrestling most of her life, but initially, she strayed away from the wrestling business. She was an ace player of volleyball and went on to receive her bachelor’s degree in public relations from North Carolina State University.

In 2012, Charlotte decided to follow in her father’s steps by reporting to WWE’s developmental territory, NXT, for training. She made her in-ring debut later that year because of the natural athleticism and dedication that set her apart very fast. Under the watch of seasoned trainers and mentors, Charlotte polished her skills, waiting patiently for her eventual rise to the top of WWE’s women’s division.

NXT Women’s Championship Reign

On May 29, 2014, Charlotte earned her first major championship at NXT TakeOver. She wrestled Natalya for the new NXT Women’s Championship. In good tribute to their wrestling families, this was a match of high technical skill bordered with good storytelling. Charlotte came out of the match to win her first title, thus cementing her star-up within WWE.

She held the NXT Women’s Championship for 258 days, fending off many others who included Bayley and Sasha Banks. These matches later had the even-necessary description of being intense and athletic while setting an expectation for what an NXT women’s match should be. In all this, Charlotte’s run in NXT built that platform, hence lifting her to stardom.

WWE Divas Championship Reign
In 2015, she made her main roster debut as part of the “Divas Revolution.” With allies Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks by her side, Charlotte desired not only more competitiveness in the women’s division but respect as well. At Night of Champions on September 20, 2015, Charlotte captured the WWE Divas Championship by defeating Nikki Bella.

Charlotte’s Divas Championship reign really was the true turning point for the women’s division. The athleticism and storytelling the matches are putting on display now far surpass the much-maligned “diva” era. She will successfully defend her title against Nikki Bella, Paige, and Brie Bella, cementing Charlotte as a dominant champion.

WWE Women’s Championship Reign

WWE went so far as to rename the Divas Championship to the WWE Women’s Championship in 2016; everything changed there. It was at WrestleMania 32 when Charlotte met Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch in an evenly-bound triple threat match, where the first WWE Women’s Champion was going to be crowned. Continually, back with what many believed was an excellent, show-stealing bout, Charlotte sent everyone home in first place by winning and becoming the inaugural WWE Women’s Champion of the modern era.

During her reign as a WWE Women’s Champion, Charlotte was able to get many high-profile matches and feuds. More significantly, her feud with Sasha Banks delivered some goodness; most notably, it brought the first-ever Hell in a Cell match that contained women and the Falls Count Anywhere one. Her consistency in great performances cemented her place as one of the females in WWE who stood among the best workers.

Raw Women’s Championship Reigns
With the eventual renaming to the Raw Women’s Championship, Charlotte would continue to dominate the division. Her feud with Sasha Banks picked up steam, as both women began exchanging the title with relentless aggression and work ethic that was undoubtedly on fulfillment. Charlotte’s adaptability through changing opponents and match stipulations really was a hallmark of her range and ability.

One of Charlotte’s most memorable Raw Women’s Championship reigns began at SummerSlam 2016, where she captured the championship from Sasha Banks. She aligned herself at the forefront as a star on the Raw brand and truly established herself as one of the top ladies in women’s wrestling. The same is true for bashed guys with highly praised matches against Bayley, for their physicality, and Nia Jax, for storytelling in the period.

SmackDown Women’s Championship Reigns

Charlotte Flair then found success in the SmackDown brand, winning the SmackDown Women’s Championship. Her first reign as SmackDown Women’s Champion was on November 14, 2017, defeating Natalya in her hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina. The win cemented Charlotte as the first woman to become the NXT Women’s Champion, Divas Champion, Raw Women’s Champion, and SmackDown Women’s Champion all at the same time.
Throughout her reign, Charlotte had some spanking feuds with a few of WWE’s best female talents. Notably, this would be the 2018 feud with Becky Lynch. Both former friends engaged in a heated and personal feud that topped off with the historic Last Woman Standing at Evolution, which was the very first all-women’s pay-per-view event in WWE history. She can turn in good matches and storylines, making her Risestar in the women’s division on SmackDown.

Triple Crown and Grand Slam Champion

These would make Charlotte Flair a Triple Crown and Grand Slam Champion in WWE. Any wrestler who holds three of the following career titles—NXT Women’s, Raw Women’s, and SmackDown Women’s Championships— becomes a Triple Crown Champion. Charlotte holds this distinction with various title reigns across all three brands.

Apart from being a Triple Crown Champion, Charlotte also turned out to be a Grand Slam Champion after winning the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship when she returned to team with Asuka for the Women’s Tag Team Championship on December 20, 2020, thereby ending her hiatus at TLC. This added yet another feather to Charlotte’s cap and fattened her record as one of the most successful female professional wrestlers in WWE.

NXT Women’s Championship Return

In 2020 alone, Charlotte Flair was able to make a shocking return to NXT and firmly re-ignite earlier battles with Rhea Ripley. With that target on WrestleMania 36, Charlotte put Ripley’s NXT Women’s Championship on high grounds in one of the biggest matches. Charlotte won the match to become a two-time NXT Women’s Champion.

With Charlotte’s return to the brand, there came a renewed focus on her will for elevation of the women’s division throughout WWE. Her matches with Ripley, Io Shirai, and other NXT talents were critically acclaimed, especially examples of Charlotte’s ability to adapt to different styles and opponents. Charlotte would go on to take this further by securing a second reign as NXT Women’s Champion, proving herself across the board as a versatile and dominant competitor.
