Prior to his death, he had been dealing with an undisclosed illness since February, which was reportedly life-threatening, and he was nearing a return to WWE before his passing.

We wish his family comfort during this difficult time. Below, we look at a career retrospective of his career as Bray Wyatt and The Fiend.

Bray Wyatt was born Windham Lawrence Rotunda on May 23, 1987, in Brooksville, Florida, and has captured the hearts and minds of fans worldwide with his unique character, captivating promos, and memorable in-ring performances. Throughout his career, Wyatt underwent various character transformations and storylines that solidified his place as one of the most intriguing and innovative talents in the wrestling industry.

Early Beginnings and the Birth of Bray Wyatt (2009–2012):

Bray Wyatt’s journey in the world of professional wrestling began in 2009, when he signed a developmental contract with WWE. Under the ring name “Alex Rotundo,” he worked in Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW), where he honed his skills and developed the foundations of his character. However, it wasn’t until 2012 that the wrestling world would be introduced to the enigmatic persona of Bray Wyatt.

Debuting on WWE’s main roster as the leader of The Wyatt Family, Bray Wyatt quickly became a standout character. Sporting a mysterious and charismatic aura, Wyatt portrayed a cult-like figure who preached about darkness, chaos, and societal decay. Alongside Luke Harper and Erick Rowan, he embarked on a mission to “save” WWE from itself, targeting various superstars in their eerie crusade.

The Wyatt Family’s Dominance and Feuds (2013–2014):

The Wyatt Family’s initial run was marked by their dominance and memorable feuds. Their clashes with established stars like Kane, Daniel Bryan, and John Cena showcased Wyatt’s ability to create compelling narratives and deliver spine-tingling promos. One of the highlights during this period was the “House of Horrors” match against Randy Orton, which added an element of psychological horror to their rivalry.

The culmination of their feud with John Cena led to a highly anticipated match at WrestleMania XXX, where Wyatt’s character was put to the test on the grandest stage of them all. Though he didn’t secure the victory, his performance demonstrated his potential as a top-tier talent.

The Transformation of Bray Wyatt (2015–2016):

After the dissolution of the Wyatt family in 2014, Bray Wyatt underwent a transformation that would redefine his character. Sporting a more ominous and supernatural persona, he returned with a new level of psychological warfare. This was exemplified by his feud with Roman Reigns, where he introduced the eerie “House of Horrors” match concept once again.

However, it was in 2016 that Wyatt experienced one of the defining moments of his career. During the WWE Brand Extension, he was drafted to SmackDown Live, and his feud with Randy Orton took a shocking turn. Orton, who had been a rival of Wyatt’s, joined forces with him, leading to the formation of The Wyatt Family 2.0. This alliance culminated in Wyatt capturing the WWE Championship at the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view, solidifying his status as a top champion.

The “Eater of Worlds” Reign (2017–2018):

As WWE Champion, Bray Wyatt embraced his role as the “Eater of Worlds. He engaged in a memorable rivalry with Randy Orton, which saw their conflict play out in a unique projected visual match at WrestleMania 33. However, Wyatt’s reign was relatively short-lived, as he dropped the title to Orton shortly after WrestleMania.

Despite the setback, Wyatt’s character continued to evolve. He introduced “The Woken” Matt Hardy to WWE audiences, and the two engaged in a bizarre yet entertaining feud that incorporated elements of broken universes and absurdity. This period showcased Wyatt’s versatility in adapting to different storytelling styles.

The Fiend Emerges (2019–2020):

In 2019, Bray Wyatt unveiled his most iconic and transformative character yet: “The Fiend. With a horrifying mask, a lantern shaped like his own head, and an eerie entrance, The Fiend was a supernatural and psychologically disturbing entity. The character quickly became a fan favourite, with Wyatt’s portrayal praised for its depth and complexity.

The Fiend’s feuds were marked by their psychological intensity. His clashes with Finn Bálor, Seth Rollins, and Daniel Bryan showcased Wyatt’s ability to immerse himself fully in his character. The Firefly Fun House segments added layers of depth to the persona, blurring the lines between reality and fiction.

At WWE Crown Jewel in 2019, The Fiend defeated Seth Rollins to capture the Universal Championship. This victory solidified the character’s status as one of the most compelling and dominant forces in WWE.

Challenges and Legacy (2021–2022):

Despite the success of the Fiend character, Bray Wyatt faced challenges behind the scenes. Creative differences and managerial changes within WWE seemed to impact the direction of his character. His feud with Randy Orton revisited past storylines, and the character’s momentum wavered.

Tragically, Bray Wyatt’s WWE journey took an unexpected turn in 2021. In July, he was released from his WWE contract, shocking fans and the wrestling community. His departure left a void, as The Fiend had become a central figure in WWE storytelling.

Legacy:

Bray Wyatt’s career left an indelible mark on the wrestling industry. His unique ability to blend horror, psychological drama, and captivating storytelling garnered him a dedicated fanbase. The character of The Fiend, in particular, stands as one of the most iconic and chilling personas in recent wrestling history.
